04.08.2023: New vhb-lecture “Advanced Systems Engineering of Production Plants (ASEP)”

The Institute FAPS is very pleased to be able to expand its e-learning offer for students in the form of a new lecture on the topic of “Advanced Systems Engineering of Production Plants (ASEP)”. This is made possible by funding from the “Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern” (vhb), under which the new lecture will be developed in the form of a CLASSIC vhb course and offered to students at all Bavarian universities from the summer semester of 2024. By firmly anchoring it as a future elective module in the mechanical engineering, mechatronics and industrial engineering degree programmes at FAU, the ASEP lecture will in future provide important fundamentals for the established Master’s internship “Continuous Engineering”, which has already been supervised by the FAPS Chair for many years. The need for teaching the fundamentals of advanced systems engineering in technical degree programmes is also underlined by the involvement of other partner universities. The development of the ASEP course is currently actively supported by the Coburg University of Applied Sciences, the University of Applied Sciences Amberg-Weiden and the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences.

In the ASEP lecture, the development process of production plants from the product idea to commissioning is to be examined and the practical use of software is to be vividly conveyed. Through an interactive and varied presentation of the learning content, students can consume the modules flexibly and according to their own learning pace. In the vhb course ASEP, we present a variety of established methods based on processes directly related to the product development process as well as through upstream and downstream steps. The course consists of 14 lecture units that teach the theoretical basics of Advanced Systems Engineering. Furthermore, three additional case studies deepen the theoretical knowledge by having the students work on practical problems. After the motivation and general methods are presented in the first section, the course is structured analogously to the product life cycle. For example, sustainability aspects can be considered in steps upstream of production such as design, the actual production processes as well as in areas downstream of production such as recycling. The broad spectrum of possible measures will be illustrated by a large number of illustrative examples of various product and process types.
