Electric Motor Production

The research sector Electric Motor Production of the Institute for Factory Automation and Production Systems (FAPS) at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) emerged from the former research sector Electromechanical Engineering, which was founded in 2011 under the project name “E|Drive-Center” and split into the two research sectors Electric Motor Production and Electric Road Systems in 2023.

The research sector Electric Motor Production serves as a communicator for research and industry partners, students, and the public for the development and exchange of production-related topics relating to electric machines. From process development and optimization to recycling, the research sector now covers the entire field of electric motor and electric generator production. In addition to conventional methods, artificial intelligence techniques, in particular machine learning, are increasingly being used to optimize, monitor and control processes.

The main areas of research can be divided as follows:

The research sector Electric Motor Production fits perfectly into the Bavarian cluster initiatives for mechatronics and automation, automotive, and environmental technology. It effectively supports the automotive industry in the increased use of electric drive technology in vehicles and makes a targeted contribution to the transfer of science in the field of electric drive technology to Bavarian and German industry. To this end, the research sector organizes the annual specialist seminar “Production of Electric Drives” as well as the international scientific conferences E|DPC (International Electric Drives Production Conference) and E|PTS (Production Technologies and Systems for E-Mobility). Thanks to the close cooperation in the course of research and industrial projects, the findings and innovative technologies developed for the production of electric drives quickly find their way into industrial application and are an excellent demonstration of the dynamism and innovative strength of the research sector Electric Motor Production. This underscores its overall importance for future developments in the field of electromobility and industrial applications.
