01.04.2023: “SmartSeal” research project launched

The “SmarSeal” research project addresses the in-situ monitoring of rotary shaft seals in mechanical engineering. The aim of the project is to measure the temperature at the sealing lip in order to be able to make a statement about the wear status due to thermal damage to the sealing ring. For this purpose, a temperature sensor system is integrated into a shaft sleeve, which is built using MID technology. The research challenge in manufacturing is the required integration density and the harsh operating conditions. At the same time, the Institute for Machine Elements at the University of Stuttgart uses simulations and their adjustment on the test rig to ensure that the temperatures measured in the inner sleeve allow conclusions to be drawn about the true temperature of the sealing lip. The aim is also to determine the optimum position of the temperature sensor.
